The Burlington Humane Society is proud to be a no-kill animal shelter.

Accomplishments

Accomplishments of the Burlington Humane Board of Directors:
  • Drastically enhanced Burlington Humane's role in the community by building a state-of-the-art shelter that also allows us to house dogs on-site.
  • Improved training programs for dog walkers, Feed and Clean volunteers and receptionists, ensuring consistency for both animals and volunteers.
  • Improved animal care standards, including procedures and protocols for handling various outbreaks.
  • Implemented a new Shelter Vet program to ensure the best possible care for our animals while being fiscally responsible.
  • New Fundraising events including the "Ruff Ride" motorcycle event and "For the Animals" Lottery.
  • Dramatically improved volunteer communication by taking a more hands on approach and bettering communication methods, including orientation nights an exit interview questionnaire and a suggestion box program.
  • Renewal and expansion of our education program, working with youth groups to increase awareness about animal care.
  • Improved employee relations including a formal recruitment process, training opportunities (Shelter Management Program, PABA through the University of Guelph, First Aid certification through St. John's Ambulance, Safety Certification Part 1 through Workplace Safety Prevention Services), implementation of job descriptions, goal setting and performance reviews.
  • As part of our Business Plan, we've created BHS Vision, Mission and Value Statements.
  • Successful Pet Therapy Program with over 100 volunteers.
  • Modernized our website with increased online fundraising capabilities.
  • Implemented Facebook and Twitter social media campaigns to raising Burlington Humane awareness.
  • Increased Loft sales.
  • Increased community awareness via media outlets- TV, radio, print media and social networking.
  • Future forecast and budget put into place for building maintenance.
  • Membership with Volunteer Canada.
  • Shelter safety improvements including monthly workplace inspections, first aid program, driver program and incident investigation procedures.
  • Adopted a "Directors Code of Conduct and Policies on Conflict of Interest" for all Board of Directors members.
  • Attracted younger members to fill vacant board positions helping to bring a fresh perspective to the table, and continuity on the board for the future.
